Biological Safety Cabinet validation testing verifies that a cabinet functions correctly and performs in accordance with the manufacturer’s design specification. Also known as BSC testing or Microbiological Safety Cabinet (MSC) testing, it assesses the performance needed to provide personnel, product and environmental protection, as applicable to the cabinet class.
Armstrong Environmental tests cabinets using the manufacturer’s guidance, BS EN 12469 and the HSE Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens guidance, Management and operation of microbiological containment laboratories, where applicable.
Our performance validation testing includes the following key tests, as applicable to the cabinet:
Downflow velocity: measures the downward airflow within the working area.
Inflow velocity: measures the inward airflow through the cabinet opening.
Airflow smoke visualisation: examines airflow patterns and identifies disturbances.
Operator Protection Factor testing using KI-Discus: assesses protection against aerosols escaping through the working opening.
Filter aerosol challenge testing: assesses HEPA filter integrity, including potential leakage through filters and seals.
The examiner considers the findings together and uses professional judgement to determine whether the cabinet has passed or failed.
Airflow, operator protection and filter integrity tests assess different aspects of cabinet performance. An acceptable airflow reading alone does not demonstrate that the filters are free from leaks or that the cabinet provides adequate operator protection.
Combining these tests provides a more complete assessment of the cabinet’s performance under the conditions tested.
The cabinet must be empty of laboratory equipment and consumables for the duration of testing. Relevant documentation, including the manufacturer’s manual, should be available for review.
Safe, unobstructed access and site support are needed to operate the cabinet and complete the examination. Where internal access is required, the cabinet must be fumigated beforehand, with arrangements agreed before testing.
Armstrong Environmental provides independent Biological Safety Cabinet performance validation testing, with clear findings and practical recommendations.
Our team includes LEV Specialists listed on the BOHS Register of Occupational Hygiene Professionals, which is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
