What is Occupational Hygiene?

Occupational hygiene, or Industrial hygiene as its also referred to, is the recognition, evaluation and control of risks within the working environment.

“When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it, but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind…” Lord Kelvin

Hygienists are the occupational health professionals who are focused on the prevention of worker ill health from exposure to hazardous substances.

Exposure to hazardous substances can occur in a variety of ways including inhalation, ingestion eg transferred on hands when eating or smoking; or through skin absorption.

Occupational hygiene forms the link between exposure to a hazard and the risk of illness arising from that exposure. It relies on the identification of a hazard, then the ability to quantify the risk to health from that hazard and finally, having the experience and skill to recommend appropriate measures to control the risk.

With over 30 years’ experience in occupational hygiene you can be confident that our highly trained, qualified and competent staff will be able to ensure your company's compliance with Health and Safety Regulations.

Sunny Cyprus

This year our Project Manager, Peter Surtees, has been providing support to a client in Cyprus.  The project included two visits to the island commissioning a local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system which is used to control diesel exhaust emissions from a vehicle.  The approach we take to commissioning a system like this is across a two phased approach.  Phase one being a thorough examination and test checking the system complies with relevant design criteria, HSG 258 values and COSHH Regulations.  Phase two includes proving effective control using careful occupational hygiene techniques to assess airborn levels of hazardous substances and proving the sytem is capable of reducing operator exposures to hazardous substances.
