Occupational Hygiene Technician (Graduate Role)
Up to £20,000 p.a.
(depending on degree type Science or Environmental background)
Hours per week
Full Time 40 hours plus overtime as required to meet business demands

· Workplace Exposure Air Monitoring
· Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) testing
· Workplace Noise at Assessments

Occupational hygiene, or Industrial hygiene as its also referred to, is the recognition, evaluation and control of risks within the working environment.

Hygienists are the occupational health professionals who are focused on the prevention of worker ill health from exposure to hazardous substances.
Exposure to hazardous substances can occur in a variety of ways including inhalation, ingestion eg transferred on hands when eating or smoking; or through skin absorption.
Occupational hygiene forms the link between exposure to a hazard and the risk of illness arising from that exposure. It relies on the identification of a hazard, then the ability to quantify the risk to health from that hazard and finally, having the experience and skill to recommend appropriate measures to control the risk.

Armstrong Environmental are looking for a Graduate to join our Occupational Hygiene Team.
This role is based at our County Durham office however travel will be required throughout the UK, and potentially abroad, including overnight stays.
What is An Occupational Hygienist?
Occupational Hygiene, or Industrial Hygiene (IH) as it’s also referred as is a science and engineering discipline used to control health hazards at work.
Hygienist can help in a number of ways including:
· Identifying substances used on a site where there is a potential for exposure which might result in harm;
· Identify jobs or tasks the lead to exposure;
· Reviewing the legal requirements;
· Assisting site implement the principles of good practice for control of exposure to substances hazardous to health;
· Developing a workplace monitoring plan to confirm operator’s personal exposure levels and current control measures;
· Advise on additional control measures to reduce exposures.
You will receive relevant training both in-house and externally, attending relevant British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) courses to enable you to support and undertake a wide range of projects as outlined above.
You will be required to interpret monitoring results and prepare the associated reports and communicate the results as required with colleagues and clients.
We’re looking for someone who has a confident manner, is passionate, punctual and self-motivated. You must be able to react to change quickly and accept that plans often need amending at short notice.

You can teach an old dog new tricks!
Managing Director Mark Armstrong proved that you can teach an old dog new tricks having just been awarded his Proficiency Certificate in P601 Thorough Examination and Testing of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Systems.
Mark attended the course in Edinburgh provided by Bill Cassells from Oxyl8 Consultants and found the course to be both stimulating and a useful refresher to back almost 20 years practical experience testing LEV systems across the UK.
If you're looking to get an LEV system tested having a P601 is an easy way to demonstrate that a consultant has the competancy to carry out the work correctly ensuring you dont fall foul of the law or put employees at risk.Read More
